Robert Owen was born in 1930 on a farm in Polk County, Missouri. He was ninth of ten children and has carried the workload of a man since the age of ten. For a boy growing up during the droughts and the depression, it seemed highly unlikely he would accomplish his goal of becoming an artist. However, talent like his cannot be buried or forgotten, and somehow he managed to work his way through the Los Angeles Art Center.
There is a fundamental dignity and tenderness in those who people his canvases, whether they are capering playfully or bowed down with despair. Owen imparts a very personal, moving quality to his subjects and the soft brush strokes express love and sincerity.
